Being diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer made it difficult to do anything, let alone breathe. I had lost my paternal great grandmother to breast cancer, my grandmother to ovarian cancer, and my dad to colon cancer. I was terrified to say the least!
With my family history, I consider my diagnosis a blessing. Early detection saved my life. I had the opportunity to attack my cancer aggressively and was proactive to minimize chances of reoccurrence. I underwent 10 surgeries in 9 months which included a double mastectomy, 4 reconstruction surgeries, a complete hysterectomy, and several surgeries to overcome a staph infection and C-Diff all while undergoing 24 weeks of intensive chemotherapy.
I spent several weeks in the hospital under the care of an amazing infectious disease and cancer treatment team while my son (17), family, and friends took care of my daughter (12). Because of her age, she could not see or visit me. It was the toughest, yet most rewarding time of my life.
Not only did I realize how strong and resilient I truly am, I was given the chance to reevaluate my priorities and learned to let go of things that were no longer serving as a positive influence in my life. My faith was renewed and my family and I created a bond that can never be broken. Their participation in my journey without fear showed them how to overcome life’s obstacles while influencing and impacting others.
Today, I live life out loud and take nothing for granted. I am very passionate about helping others find their way to optimal health through mindful living within PepsiCo and personally. I’m the Lead Champion for the PepsiCo Pink PEPers, and am an advocate for Susan G. Komen of Maryland. Please connect with me for support.
It is moments like this, your generosity can make a real difference. Together, let’s show breast cancer patients there’s a whole community standing by their side.
